TORONTO, Ontario — A delegation from Shanghai Christian Council (SCC) / Three-Self Patriotic Movement (TSPM) visited Canada from August 12 – 18, 2015. The visit by five Chinese dignitaries touched on Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal, including a visit to the national support office of the Canadian Bible Society at 10 Carnforth Road in Toronto.
The SCC is the local governing body that recognizes approved Christian churches and ministries in the region of Shanghai, while TSPM is one of China’s largest Protestant denominations. Together, SCC/TSPM forms a key Bible ministry partner for the United Bible Societies in the Chinese Bible mission.
The delegates included three men and two women: Xie Bingguo (Chairman, SCC and President, East China Theological Seminary), Wang Jianhua (Vice Provost, East China Theological Seminary), Huang Cheng (Pastor, Shanghai Committee of TSPM and Christian Council), Chen Yili (female, Pastor, Shanghai Committee of TSPM and Christian Council), and Quan Shaohua (female, Secretary, Shanghai Committee of TSPM and Christian Council).
“We are hopeful that one result of this visit will be strengthening of the relationship with the SCC/TSPM,” says Canadian Bible Society National Director, Interim, Don Hutchinson. “Given widely publicized reports about challenges faced by the Church in China, this is an opportunity to introduce our Christian brothers and sisters to the Church here in Canada.
“Shanghai is the largest city in the world. Its population is roughly ten times the size of Toronto. The SCC has a positive reputation for being a council that permits a range of Christian Church expression that would align more closely with the range we would find in Canada, than is found in some other Chinese provinces.”
In addition to their time at the Canadian Bible Society, the delegation met with representatives from Tyndale University College and Seminary, which has a Chinese Ministry Program and Canadian Chinese School of Theology. The delegates also experienced tours of Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal in addition to a variety of church visits.
The trip is being hosted by the Canadian Bible Society at the request of the United Bible Societies, the international organization of Bible societies around the world.
The Canadian Bible Society (CBS) is a founding Bible society for the Amity Press in Nanjing, China. CBS exists to promote and encourage, without doctrinal note or comment, the translation, publication, distribution and use of the Scriptures throughout Canada and Bermuda, and to co-operate with the United Bible Societies in its worldwide work.

UNE DÉLÉGATION CHINOISE EN VISITE AU CANADA AFIN DE NOUER ET DE RENFORCER LES RELATIONS EN VUE DES PROJETS FUTURES
TORONTO — Une délégation du Shanghai Christian Council (SCC) (Conseil chrétien de Shanghai) et du Three-Self Patriotic Movement (TSPM) (Mouvement patriotique des trois autonomies) était en visite au Canada du 12 au 18 août 2015. Les cinq dignitaires chinois composant la délégation se sont rendus à Toronto, notamment au bureau de soutien national de la Société biblique canadienne, au 10 Carnforth Road, ainsi qu’à Ottawa et à Montréal.
Le SCC est l’organe local qui reconnaît les églises et les ministères chrétiens approuvés dans la région de Shanghai, tandis que le TSPM est l’une des plus importantes confessions protestantes de la Chine. Ensemble, le SCC et le TSPM forment un important partenaire pour l’Alliance biblique universelle dans le cadre de la mission biblique chinoise.
Les délégués comprenaient trois hommes et deux femmes : Xie Bingguo (président du SCC et du Séminaire théologique de l’Est de la Chine), Wang Jianhua (vice-recteur du Séminaire théologique de l’Est de la Chine), Huang Cheng (pasteur et membre du Comité du TSPM et du SCC), Chen Yili (pasteure et membre du Comité du TSPM et du SCC) et Quan Shaohua (secrétaire du Comité du TSPM et du SCC).
« Nous espérons que cette visite permettra entre autres de renforcer les relations avec le SCC et le TSPM », a déclaré Don Hutchinson, directeur national intérimaire de la Société biblique canadienne, en ajoutant : « Étant donné les comptes rendus largement médiatisés sur les difficultés auxquelles l’Église est confrontée en Chine, c’est une occasion de faire connaitre l’Église du Canada à nos sœurs et nos frères chrétiens. »
« Shanghai est la plus grande ville du monde. Sa population est presque dix fois plus élevée que celle de Toronto. Le SCC jouit d’une bonne réputation et il permet des expressions de l’Église chrétienne qui s’apparentent davantage aux expressions que nous trouvons au Canada qu’à celles qui existent dans d’autres provinces chinoises. »
Outre le temps qu’elle a passé à la Société biblique canadienne, la délégation a rencontré des représentants de l’Université Tyndale, laquelle a un programme d’études pastorales pour les Chinois ainsi qu’une école de théologie canado-chinoise. Les délégués ont également visité Toronto, Ottawa et Montréal en plus de diverses églises.
Le voyage des délégués a été organisé par la Société biblique canadienne à la demande de l’Alliance biblique universelle, l’organisation internationale qui rassemble les sociétés bibliques de partout dans le monde.
