CMDS CANADA’S NEW FILM, THE GIFT, OFFERS A RARE AND AUTHENTIC INSIGHT INTO ONE FAMILY’S EXPERIENCE

November 14, 2013

CMDS logoHALIFAX, N.S. — The Christian Medical and Dental Society of Canada (CMDS Canada), a national association of doctors, dentists, and students, announces the release of its new short film, The Gift. Designed for use in church congregations, the film offers a positive look at palliative care and the end-of-life experience and is accompanied by resources that enable viewers to oppose the possible legalization of Physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia in Canada.

The project was filmed in Kentville and Halifax, Nova Scotia during the summer of 2013. It features two participants: Dr. Catherine McNally, a palliative care physician, and Dr. John Sumarah, a psychologist and educator. The film centers on Dr. Sumarah’s experience of the loss of his wife, Colleen, in December 2012 after a five-month battle with cancer.

The idea of The Gift was born through the generous donations of CMDS Canada members at the CMDS Canada annual meetings in Edmonton in early May 2013.

The film is available free of charge online, along with additional accompanying resources, at: http://cmdsmedia.wix.com/thegift

CMDS Canada designed the film and its resources as an educational tool to raise awareness of the perils of Physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia in Canada. It is designed primarily for church congregations across Canada and can also easily be shared online with friends, family, and colleagues around the world.
