TORONTO — (CANADIAN CHRISTIAN NEWS SERVICE) — A national Music Care Conference – presenting topics on the healing capacity of music – will take place in Calgary (Oct.25) and Waterloo (Nov.15).
Inuit Singer Songwriter Susan Aglukark is the keynote performer for both one-day conferences, joined by leading experts in the field of the integration of music across the care spectrum.
The Calgary Music Care Conference, at the Rosza Centre, University of Calgary, focuses on Music through the Lifespan and will explore music care topics in the areas of dementia, palliative care, Parkinson’s Disease, stroke recovery and singing and wellness. The Waterloo Music Care Conference, at the John Aird Centre, Wilfrid Laurier University, will focus on Singing in Care and will examine singing in dementia, stroke rehabilitation, palliative care, special needs, Parkinson’s Disease and mental health.
Jason and Marjorie Crigler, Calgary’s keynote speakers, will share Jason’s miraculous story of stroke recovery from a caregiver’s perspective while Waterloo will host “Singing Doctor,” Dr. Carey Andrew-Jaja who welcomes new babies with song in the delivery room.
“The Music Care Conference brings together the community interested in exploring the innovative world of caring for people with music,” explains Bev Foster, executive director of The Room 217 Foundation, a Canadian charity dedicated to caring for the whole person with music, and sponsor of the Music Care Conference.
“We discover common themes and issues that arise when we use music right across the care spectrum. Music is a significant part of the day so participants experience music in a way that contributes to body, mind and spirit care during each conference,” says Foster. “Participants can take that knowledge back to their communities and advance how music is used where they work and serve.”
Room 217’s Music Care Conference brings together experts in their field either through academic training, clinical or life experience. Participants include healthcare providers, family and volunteer caregivers, care receivers, musicians, faith-based and community agencies, students and the community-at-large.
