Breaking Barriers in the Sky: Canadian Female Pilot Serves Isolated Communities this Women of Aviation Week

Kitchener, ON – [March 3, 2025] – Women of Aviation Week celebrates the anniversary of the first female pilot license. Their focus on the past, present and future is a poignant symbol of Canadian pilot Deborah Edward’s inspiration. Edward, an MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship) pilot, is making an extraordinary impact from the cockpit, preparing to fly beyond borders to serve isolated communities in Haiti, where aviation is a lifeline.
Growing up in Kitchener, Ontario, Deborah’s passion for flying began at the age of three. While always drawn to missionary work, she never imagined she could combine her faith and love for aviation—until she discovered MAF at an aviation event in high school. Inspired by pioneering female aviators like Betty Greene, she pursued flight training, overcoming financial hurdles, extreme weather conditions in Northern BC, and the challenges of an industry where women are underrepresented.
“Stepping out in faith can be scary, but there is nothing more fulfilling than serving the Lord wholeheartedly,” says Deborah. “God uses the passions He places in our hearts to bless others.”
Now in Haiti, Deborah is preparing to deliver medical supplies, food, and relief aid to communities facing economic hardship and civil unrest. “The need for mission aviation is clear,” she shares. “Not only do people here need essential resources, but they also need the love and hope of Christ.”
Through her journey, Deborah hopes to inspire young girls to pursue aviation and step into the calling God has placed on their lives.
“I am so thankful to be in a position to make a difference here in Haiti. This started with a leap of faith into the world of aviation, and it required lots of hard work and humility. I give all the glory to God that I am now on the mission’s field.”
Interviews with Deborah Edwards, suggested press questions and photos are available.
