TORONTO—Christmas will be a little brighter for clients of Toronto’s Scott Mission this year, thanks to a partnership with the Canadian Bible Society (CBS), which will allow the mission to distribute thousands of New Testaments to their clients.
The Scott Mission is a Christian, non-denominational street mission in downtown Toronto that serves the poor and needy, offering support and provisions for the homeless, low-income families, children and youth.
“By Christmas Day, we expect to serve nearly 3,000 families who come for free Christmas hampers,” says Peter Duraisami, Chief Executive Officer of The Scott Mission. “We will be giving them the New Testaments. Then on Christmas day we will be feeding nearly 300 homeless men and we look forward to giving each one of them the gift of a Bible as well.”
Cristina Bonadonna, the Mission’s Director of Men’s Ministry says the New Testaments are an answer to prayer. “We are so thankful for the Canadian Bible Society’s response to this need.”
“At the CBS we seek partnerships that further our mandate: to translate, publish and distribute Christian Scriptures in a way that encourages their use,” says Don Miller, Director of Canadian Ministry for the CBS.
“Christmas is a time when many people experience spiritual openness and longings, and when they’re also more receptive to the hope and promise of the Gospel. So we see God’s hand in bringing about this partnership with The Scott Mission. It’s a natural fit for us.”
The CBS provided 3,500 Bibles, New Testaments and Scripture portions in English, French, Spanish, Portugese, Persian, Arabic, and Chinese.
As a national religious charitable organization, the purposes of the Canadian Bible Society are to translate without doctrinal note, publish, and distribute the Christian Scriptures, and to promote and encourage the use of the Bible, throughout Canada and worldwide in cooperation with members of the United Bible Societies and other organizations.
