Canadian Furniture Mogul Urges Readers to Go Big in New Memoir
Richard Magnussen Pens “Going Big; Lessons on Success in Business, Life and Faith”
WATERLOO, Ont., January 14, 2025—Richard Magnussen’s life is a testament to the power of legacy and mentorship. Taking the reins of Magnussen Furniture in 1970, he expanded on what his father began out of an office that had previously been a chicken coop. Today, the global enterprise employs over 300 people and 10,000 contract workers with distribution offices worldwide and continues to see year-over-year growth. In Going Big (Siretona Creative, January 2025), Magnussen urges readers to go big in business but, most importantly, in their faith and for their family.
Award-winning business mogul Magnussen began writing Going Big to impart his life lessons to his children and grandchildren. However, as he delved deeper into his experiences, he realized his message of faith, family, and perseverance could empower a broader audience, including aspiring entrepreneurs and business leaders.
“Going big has been a thrilling, fulfilling, often surprising, and never dull ride of family and business success lasting over fifty years,” said Magnussen. “Life was far from a comfortable ride, but it was crafted with a higher purpose.”
Magnussen’s career is marked by big, often risky decisions that have been questioned or raised industry eyebrows but ultimately proven successful.
In the mid-90s, he took the unconventional step in the furniture industry of closing wholesale showrooms on Sundays. While his sales team was initially concerned about the decision, the company saw sales rise by 25 per cent that year.
While Magnussen Furniture has come a long way since its inception, what hasn’t changed is the company’s commitment to family, philanthropy, and faith, as well as Magnussen’s belief in the importance of falling forward and embracing change.
“My hope is that as readers walk through this story, they will experience a deeper understanding of a life situation, unexpected inspiration, or a fresh perspective,” said Magnussen. “I hope readers discover the reality and clarity of how living out faith in God will lead to a life of extraordinary wisdom, excellence, and generosity.”
