Am I Safe?
Exploring Fear and Anxiety with Children
by Tim Huff and Iona Snair
Illustrated by Tim Huff

Includes a Discussion and Activity Guide with a special feature from singer Steve Bell

In a recent publication from CMHO, the Public Health Agency of Canada, it was reported that an Ontario study shows “Anxiety has been called the most prevalent mental health issue among Canadian children.” Stats show that

  • 1/2 of Ontario parents report having had concerns about their child’s level of anxiety.
  • 1/3 of Ontario parents have had a child miss school due to anxiety.
  • 1/4 of Ontario parents have missed work to care for a child with anxiety. This is significantly higher among parents who have had concerns about their child’s anxiety.
  • 62% of Ontario youth report ever having had concerns about their level of anxiety; only 3 in 10 (32%) have spoken to a mental health care professional about anxiety.
This new children’s book by Tim Huff and Iona Snair is another jewel of perfectly-illustrated themes that encourage parents, grandparents, and teachers to explore the topics of fear and anxiety alongside children in their care. The book follows the pattern of three previous successful award-winning titles by Tim Huff in a series called The Children’s Compassion Series. The content is complete with a discussion and activity guide and for anxious children this book can provide a place of validation and strength to stand against fear’s “bullying” power. For friends and family it can provide a window into the common experiences and impact of fear.
With the release of Am I Safe? Tim is now the author of seven book titles, of which six have been nominated for or won national awards. They include: Bent Hope: a Street Journal, Dancing with Dynamite: Celebrating Against the Oddswhich won Best Canadian Book of the Year award in 2011, The Yuletide Factor: Cause for Perpetual Comfort and Joy, and his previous illustrated children’s books, The Cardboard Shack Beneath the Bridge: Helping Children Understand Homelessness, It’s Hard Not to Stare: Helping Children Understand Disabilities, The Honour Drum: Sharing the Beauty of Canada’s Indigenous People with Children, Families and Classrooms all published by Castle Quay Books.

Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Tim has been in full-time frontline social justice work for over 30 years-serving, learning, and teaching across North America and around the world. Tim is a much sought-after national speaker in addition to a best-selling author of books for adults and an award-winning author-illustrator of children’s books.

For the past 30 years, Iona Snair has been involved in the lives of vulnerable young people and the adults who care about them.
