TORONTO, Ontario — (CANADIAN CHRISTIAN NEWS SERVICE) — Canada’s association of writers and editors who are Christian-The Word Guild-is hosting its first ever one-day conference for professional writers. The Professional Writers’ Day will focus on the challenges, joys and responsibilities of professional writing in Canada, and is open to all who make their living-in whole or in part-through working with words. The event will be held Thursday, June 23, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Yorkdale in Toronto.
This one-day event is part of the Write Canada conference, and is open to members of The Word Guild (registration: $220) and non-members (registration: $250) alike.
Author, speaker and editor-in-chief of The Walrus, Jonathan Kay, will speak about the editorial process and the challenges of being present in the public square, and share insights on running a publication and managing writers. Editor, author, speaker and journalist Peter Stockland will address writing on issues that contradict personal morals and how journalism and Christianity can live together in a writer’s life.
Other speakers include Bret Van Staalduinen, Lorna Dueck, Janna LaFrance, Christina Crook, Paul Lafrance and Jeane Wynn.
“This first ever Professional Writers Day was planned in response to feedback we’ve received from writers, authors, journalists and communicators,” says Ruth Thorogood, executive director of The Word Guild. “We’ve worked hard to assemble some of the most accomplished individuals in this field within Canada. This day will be an opportunity for those who make their living wrestling with words, to take some time away from their keyboards, to engage their voice further in Canadian conversations, and to learn from some of the most experienced public communicators in Canada.”
Registration fees include lunch, a mix-and-mingle time with speakers and colleagues, and dinner. To register for the one-day Professional Writers’ Day, or for the full, three-day Write Canada Conference, visit www.thewordguild.com/write-canada or call 800-969-9010.
